What are the different types of lean production line layouts in a workshop?

The layout of lean production lines in workshops is a core means to eliminate production waste and enhance efficiency. Common mainstream types mainly include the following:

What are the different types of lean production line layouts in a workshop?

1. U-shaped layout

The production line is arranged in a U-shape, with the raw material entrance and finished product exit concentrated on the same side. This arrangement can reduce employee walking waste, facilitate the cultivation of multi-skilled workers, enable flexible personnel adjustments, significantly shorten the production cycle, and reduce labor costs. It is one of the most widely used layout forms in SUNQIT's lean production.

II. "One-piece flow" layout

With single-piece flow production as the core, products are allowed to circulate individually between processes, maximizing the reduction of work-in-process inventory and eliminating waste on the production line from its source. At the same time, it can minimize material handling costs and improve space and labor utilization.

III. Petal-shaped layout

Composed of multiple independent production units, it strictly adheres to the lean principle of "counterclockwise arrangement and consistent entrances and exits". This arrangement enhances mutual assistance and collaboration among the units, facilitating seamless support and backup between processes like in a relay race, thereby significantly improving the balance rate of the production line. It represents one of the ideal layouts for unit assembly lines.

IV. Serial/linear layout

That is, the traditional linear process layout, where equipment is arranged in order of processing, with clear and fixed product flow direction, requires low skill levels from employees, and is suitable for standardized production scenarios with large quantities and few product types. Quality monitoring is less difficult, and the production pace is easy to uniformly control and manage.

V. Other supplementary layouts

It also encompasses parallel layout, V/L-shaped layout, and other forms, which can be flexibly selected according to the shape of the workshop space and the characteristics of the product process. Simultaneously, the layout design must actively avoid two types of unreasonable layouts: island-type and birdcage-type, to prevent issues such as logistics blockages and inability to collaborate between units.
